Many of the books about ancient Egypt have a call number in the 932's.  The children's department has quite a selection of ancient Egypt books.  For more help or to locate a more specific topic within the ancient Eygpt books, please ask a librarian. 

The Modesto Library has a large selection of Accelerated Reading Lists, but it is important to know which school you go to.  Some of the lists are online.

If you go to http://www.stanislauslibrary.org   and click on Kids Page, there is a list of the schools with online AR lists.

ASVAB Test Books are located in the Adult Non-Fiction in 351.3 ASVAB or at the Adult Refrence desk. You can call or go online to place one of these Test books on hold or next time you are in the Library just simply ask a Reference Librarian for them.

We have a children's picture book, XE PAL, called No Biting, Louise, by Margie Palatini, which is about breaking the biting habit, and another called Little Bear and the Big Fight, by Jutta Landgrueter about the consequences of biting. I couldn't find any more than that, but will keep looking.

We have several toilet training books under the subject number of X 649.6. Anyone in the Children's Department would be glad to help you find these.

Birth certificates are available from the county clerk-recorder's office of the county the person was born in.  Many counties have their own websites and can be contacted via email. To obtain a copy of a birth
certificate, contact the county clerk-recorder's office and follow any instructions they have for requesting
these records.

If you need to know addresses, phone numbers or even website addresses of these offices, let us know what county it is for and we can find it for you. You might also be able to find the information through a search engine (www.google.com or www.yahoo.com) on the Internet. Just put the county you need followed by "clerk-recorder". For example "Stanislaus County Clerk-Recorder".

There are two ways you can buy children's books from the library. First, the Modesto Library sells used library books all the time, and you can often find used children's books to buy. These books are located around the corner from our check out desk. Second, twice a year our Modesto Friends of the Library sponsors a book fair where there is a huge assortment of new children's books to buy. Look for the announcements for the next book fair, probably this Fall.

No one knows for sure how many books there are in the world.  The GoogleAnswers website says that the Library of Congress has 18 million books, but there are more not in that collection. 

The University of California attempted to figure up the US and worldwide number of original book titles that have been published, both in and out of print. Their result was: -- 65 million book titles -- This might be the closest answer to your question.

It might depend on the topic. Whether you're doing research for a report or personal knowledge, books can be helpful. They provide information on a variety of topics. Some books are more detailed than others, and some topics have more resources/information than other topics. In addition to books, databases and magazines can be a source of information.  If you need help researching a topic, please speak with a librarian.

The series you are looking for is called Chicken Soup for the Soul. For children, there is Chicken Soup for the Kids' Soul and Chicken Soup for Little Souls. All of these can be found in our catalog under Title ("Chicken Soup for ...") and reserved online, or ask at the desk of any of our libraries for assistance.

It is the library policy that customers have to have their card in order to use the computer. You use your card to make a reservation or to sign up for available computers.
Ages 4-12 use the computers in the children's room; ages 4-7 need to have an adult with them.  The children's computers are filtered. Ages 13 and older use the adult computers.

Yes, there is a children's book titled Fiji by Rosaline Ngcheong-Lum in the Modesto, Oakdale and Turlock libraries. You can place a hold on it through our online catalog, or ask at any library for help in locating the book.

As far as creativity goes I can only give you some recommended reading to ignite the creative spark.  There are a few newer titles that we carry at the library that might help you get started with whatever it is you need to do:

We do have books about Charlemagne.  Most of what we have here in the library are biographies about him.  We also subscribe to the database "Biography Resource Center," accessed through the library's web site, that should provide you with a lot of information too.

Our Dr. Seuss books are in two spots.  XE Readers and XE picture books. Different titles are in each section.  If you stop by the children's department, we can show you where they're located.

If you mean the Dragon books by Dav Pilkey, the answer is yes. If you mean books to go with the TV program, the answer is no.

We add new children's DVDs to our collection every week, but the demand continues to outstrip our collection. Since we have a limited amount of money to spend on DVDs each year, it will likely take several more years to build up our collection to the size we would like it to be. In the meantime, you may make suggestions of DVDs you would like us to consider for purchase. And, with the limited collection we currently have, the best way to make sure you can borrow the titles you'd like is to place a hold on them.

To become a librarian you need to have a masters degree in Library Information Science.  The nearest college that offers this degree is San Jose State University, but there are other colleges in the country that offer this degree totally online.  To work at this library your degree must be from an ALA accredited school (although not all libraries require that), but you'll want to be aware of a library school's status before you enroll.

To date, the library has been unable to offer e-books due to both budget restraints and format compatibility issues. Most compatibility issues have been resolved and thanks to a grant from the Stanislaus Library Foundation, we are now in the process of establishing an e-book collection. We anticipate launching the new collection in the Spring of 2012.

Where can I find books on fairies?

The children's library has both non-fiction and fiction titles about fairies. Fairy tales are located in X398 and fiction stories about fairies are located by the author's last name. One popular fairy series is the Disney fairies series about Tinker Bell and her friends.

We do not have a book specifically on the Golden Lion Tamarin.  However, we do have a book in Salida called "South American Monkeys," which includes information on the lion tamarin.  We could try looking in animal encyclopedia sets or the World Book Encyclopedia.  Finally, we can try looking in our databases for articles.

How do I reserve a book online?

To place a hold on a book or video:

1. At the library's home page, choose FIND/RENEW MATERIALS from the menu on the left, then click on LIBRARY CATALOGS. 
2. Click on the IPAC CATALOG to open. 
3. Once you get into the catalog, search for the item you want using author, subject, title, keyword, etc. 
4. When you find the item you want, click on the title to bring up the details.
5. To place the item on hold click REQUEST ITEM.
6. Enter your library card number and the last 4 digits of your phone number, then click LOGIN.
7. A summary screen will open allowing you to select the library branch you want the book delivered to.
8. Once you have verified the information, click REQUEST.

To become a librarian, you attend college and graduate school.  Librarians have a master's degree from an accredited graduate program.  It depends on how long you take to complete your education and how many credits/classes you take each year.  College may take 4-6 years, and graduate school usually takes 2 years or longer.

Yes, anyone can get a library card. Bring a photo ID and proof of your current mailing address (a phone bill, utility bill, etc.) to the library. Just inside the main entrance is an information desk; go to it, fill out a 1-page application, present your ID and proof of address and then... voila! You will have your own library card!

Library cards can be used in a variety of ways. Typically, they are used to borrow materials (books, audio-books, etc.) from a library. The materials are to be returned to the library before or on their due date. If they are returned late, a fine is incurred.  

If an item you want is checked out, you can use your library card to request a hold on the item. When the item is available, it will be held a few days for you.

From the library website (accessed on a computer at home, for example), library cards can be used to access the databases that libraries subscribes to use. At our library, databases are free to library customers and provide reliable resources for research or informational purposes.

Library cards can be used to access computers at the library, which can be used to get onto the Internet.  (The computers with the library catalog usually don't require a library card unless you're requesting a hold for an item.)

There are a few articles from each issue of the Modesto Bee available in the library's magazine index (EBSCO Host). Since many of the articles in the Bee actually come from the Associated Press, Knight-Ridder, and other newswire services, you will find them in EBSCO, but it won't be possible to know if they also appeared in the Modesto Bee. The Modesto Library has complete back issues of the Modesto Bee, dating back to 1933 and even earlier for the newspaper's previous titles. These back issues are usually on microfilm. We have a searchable index to complement the Bee's online index and an older index on microform. Please visit the Reference Desk or call 558-7814 for assistance using these indexes or locating specific articles.

The library gets the money to buy the books, magazines, videos, and other materials as well as operate the 13 libraries in Stanislaus County from a number of sources. The largest amount of money comes from the one-eighth of a cent sales tax dedicated to the library. The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors, the California State Library, and library fines also provide some monies to keep the libraries open.  If you would like a more detailed account of where the money comes from please let us know.  The library is called free because you do not have to pay money to join the library nor do you have to pay money each time you check something out.

MySpace is blocked from use on the Children's Internet computers because you have to be 13 or older to sign up for MySpace and the Children's Internet computers are designed for kids 12 and under . We have internet filters in place to help protect kids while they are online but no filter works 100%. If you are on our internet computers be sure to keep yourself safe by not using your real name or ever giving your address, phone number, school name or other personal information to someone you don't know. Even if you think that person is another kid.

We do own Robinson Crusoe.  We have it in these formats:  book, audio, dvd.  You can call us at 558-7810 or go to our online catalog to place a hold.

At this time, it seems as though there are only 6 chapter books in the Franny K Stein series.  According to Amazon, book 7 will be published in 2008, but sometimes publish dates change.  I'm not sure if this series should be read in sequential order.

We do have a series of graphic novels about Spongebob. At this time, they are all checked out, so it would be best to put the titles you are interested in on hold. When they are returned to the library, we will hold them for you to pick up.  To find the book titles, ask a librarian, or look in the catalog under "Spongebob" (be sure you write it as one word, not two).

The Stanislaus County Library (the building at 1500 "I" Street) was built in 1971. It opened to the public on November 13, 1971.

The library owns many many books on Star Wars, from novelizations to pictorial guides to the films. If you seach the catalog for Star Wars under "any word" you will get 455 titles. Call numbers that start with an "X" are books in the children's collection. You can place a hold on any title from the library's website (stanislauslibrary.org). Or, ask at the children's or reference desk for help finding these books.

Between the children's and adult libraries, we have about 230 different titles on Star Wars, and for most of these titles we have several copies. Please ask at the desk in the Children's Department for help in finding these.

Unfortunantely we cannot have storytimes everyday simply because we have other obligations such as school/class visits, other Library programs and Summer Reading. We'll keep your recommendation in mind though.
